Eighty-year old Fred Rothwell's home took in 2 1/2 feet of water in Katrina and has yet to repair the damage to the home. He and his wife, both disabled, received a homeowner's assistance grant from the state which they used to purchase materials, but did not have enough funds to pay for labor. Rhonda Rhodes, executive director of the Hancock Resource Center, explains that many of those who have yet to recover are running into a "duplication of benefits" issue, where all monies received from various sources (homeowner grants, insurance, FEMA) must be deducted from the amount families may be eligible for under additional programs. Hancock Resource Center encourages all with unmet housing needs to contact their office (228-463-8887) so full assessments can be done to determine how the organization can best assist those still in need.
